The Malaspina Castle of Fosdinovo

Perched on a hill in Lunigiana, the Malaspina Castle of Fosdinovo is one of the best-preserved medieval manors in Tuscany. Built in the 12th century as a defensive fortress, it was expanded and transformed into a noble residence by the powerful Malaspina family, lords of the territory from the 13th to the 18th century. The Malaspinas, descendants of an ancient feudal lineage, were known for their power and patronage, as well as for hosting illustrious figures such as Dante Alighieri, who found refuge here during his exile.

The castle, reachable by car or with a short walk from the village of Fosdinovo, stands majestically with its crenellated towers, mighty walls, and inner courtyards. Comprising over 50 rooms, the manor offers a fascinating journey through halls rich in history. Among these, the Throne Room, with its Renaissance frescoes, the Audience Hall, adorned with heraldic coats of arms, and Dante's Chamber, where the poet is said to have stayed, stand out. The spaces are embellished with frescoes, period furnishings, and historical objects that recount the life of the court.

The castle is shrouded in mysterious legends, such as that of Bianca Maria Aloisia, a young noblewoman confined to a convent for love and later transformed into a ghost. It is said that her spirit still wanders within the walls. Today, the Malaspina Castle is open to visitors year-round, with guided tours that unveil its secrets.
